When speaking with parents over the past several years I’ve heard lots of misinformation that leads them to trying all sorts of wild things at bedtime – and I get it! My second baby had HORRENDOUS reflux and when I tell you I would’ve done anything to get better sleep, I mean I would’ve done AN-Y-THING. Truth be told, while some of the wild stunts I’ve heard may work temporarily, they’re usually just band-aids or quick-fix gimmicks that don’t actually address the root of the problem. What DOES work to help baby sleep best at the start of, and throughout the night? A solid bedtime routine. Routine being the operative word here.
If you’re new to the baby sleep world, or new to parenting in general, I’m going to throw some really simple advice your way that I hope you’ll hold onto for the upcoming years. While, true, I’m a sleep coach, I actually have a background in early childhood education, which lead me to discover my love for infant and toddler sleep. So, with a deep level of understanding both the infant and toddler development worlds, along with sleep, I can promise you that simply setting up a routine from day one – or day 392, or wherever you’re at! – can make a very big impact on gentle sleep training.
Now, I’m not saying that this will fix everything, BUT I am saying a solid routine is a solid start. Why? Because babies and toddlers thrive on routines. They love a good routine. Again….why? Because when they know what’s coming next, that fills their body with a sense of security – of calm and comfort. When they’re calm, it’s much easier to approach any situation, sleep being the current one at hand.
So! Please do print out this bedtime routine and post it on your baby’s door so anyone helping out can stay consistent with your new routine. The more consistency across the board, the better. You’ve got this, fam!
